Download

This review on early childhood development (ECD) research aims to make a contribution to building the knowledge of policy-makers and implementers. The National Integrated Early Childhood Development Policy, which was approved by Cabinet in December 2015, makes laudable progress through its ambitious comprehensive view of ECD. However, translating policy into practice is always challenging. Through engaging with this document, policy-makers and implementers have the opportunity to be better informed, and hence better able to engage with their work in improving the lives of children in South Africa.

pdf.png ECD service provision interventions in Sweden, Peru, Chile and Mexico A rapid review 2015 HOT

This rapid review of early childhood development (ECD) service provision interventions examines contexts where suites of ECD service provision interventions have been delivered at scale in resource-poor environments. Research shows that access to quality ECD provisioning in the early years of a child’s life is critical for their development. South Africa has therefore prioritised the need for interventions that ensure the healthy development of children during these early stages of their lives. Implementation is, however, challenging, especially as ECD delivery is not the domain of a single government department. Successful interventions require the input of multiple stakeholders, from within and outside of government, to offer a package of essential services, including appropriate early childhood stimulation.

Early Childhood Development (ECD) services are needed to support the overall development of children. With commitment from government sectors to work together, a comprehensive package of ECD services with essential components can be delivered to all South Africa’s young children. This review presents a set of indicators to support inter-sectoral planning, delivery and monitoring of an essential package of ECD services, from conception to the age of 6.
