The Use of Child- Focused Indicators to Reflect on Social Policy in South Africa The Use of Child- Focused Indicators to Reflect on Social Policy in South Africa HOT

This paper highlights the need for policies and programmes that take children into account, even when their content is not obviously or exclusively child-focused. To support this we need reliable and accessible child-centred information which can be used to inform the design and targeting of policies, programmes and interventions, and as a tool for tracking progress for children. Section 2 of the paper outlines some of the reasons why child-focused statistics are an important counterpart to national population statistics. Section 3 provides a brief overview of the main datasets, indicators and methods used. Section 4 is organised into thematic sections, and presents some of trends for children, focusing on demographic distributions, living environments and income poverty.
