The aim of the present study is to add to our understanding of the reading crisis in South Africa by focusing on the oral reading fluency (ORF) of Grade 5 English Second Language (ESL) learners in rural South Africa. To date there have been no large-scale studies focusing on oral reading fluency in English, despite this being the language of learning and teaching for 90% of students from Grade 4 onwards.
