Developing an Understanding of Complex Trauma in Childhood: Strengthening our therapeutic approaches in South Africa Developing an Understanding of Complex Trauma in Childhood: Strengthening our therapeutic approaches in South Africa

The aim of this study was to conduct an outcomes assessment of children who participated in the Isibindi-Childline therapeutic programme in July 2015, compared to a community based control group of sexually abused children receiving therapeutic support through a community-based designated child protection service. This paper explores the mental health adjustment and parenting outcomes of this cohort of children through semi-structured interviews with the caregivers, and mental health assessments (depression, anxiety and PTSD) of the child at three points using standardised screening tools.
